Mamma Mia is one of the excellent shows currently running on the Las Vegas strip. You can catch the show at the Mandalay Bay resort.

As the Las Vegas Shows Reviews blog recently noted:

Having no information about the true identify of her father, Sophie, the blushing 20 year old bride-to-be, invites the three men her mother had written about in her 1979 diary to her upcoming wedding. This is the backdrop to the captivating musical Mamma Mia, a story of a young woman who attempts to find her father and her own identity at a pivotal moment in her life. Sophie’s mother, Donna, who is also unsure of the identity of her daughter’s father, is upset by the unexpected arrival of all three men the day before the wedding.

A naive Sophie mistakenly believes that she would know her own father the moment she meets him; however, deciding who her father is from appearances and personality alone proves to be a difficult and emotional task. As all three men decide to step up to the plate and walk Sophie down the aisle, Sophie faces a harrowing dilemma with her fiancee, her mother, and the three men she lured to the Greek Island where she lives.

Even though the show takes on some important issues, the way they're portrayed is done in a entertaining and humourous way. The costumes are right out of the 70's and you'll get a kick out of the high energy dance numbers. If you haven't figured it out, the show is based around the music of the 70's supergroup ABBA. If you weren't a fan of their music before, you'll surely be one after seeing Mamma Mia!

Float Plane Crash

Just wanted to let everyone know about the float plane crash that occurred this weekend on Lake Chelan as the plan was coming in to land at the Stehekin landing. The plane is able to take off and land on water or land and it seems as the landing gear was left down after take off in Chelan. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon with no wind, so it should have been perfect for landing on the water. As soon as it touched down on the water, the plan flipped over the front and was upside down in the water. The plane is owned by Chelan Airways and has been around for a long time. People and visitors of Stehekin use it as a means of transportation.
When the Park Service staff and medical persons of the community arrived at the site, the cabin of the plane was emerged in water and only the floats remained visible. Three people were out of the plane and it took multiple attempts by several people to go under the water to get the remaining two passengers out. They did CPR on those two passengers for about two hours as they prepared for and then transported them down lake in a boat to awaiting ambulances in Field's Point. Those two passengers didn't survive the crash. You can look online at articles for their names if you are interested.
So..Steven and I are definately okay. He was actually one of the people that jumped in the water and was able to get one of the passengers out. He also road down lake while assisting with CPR along with many other medical people from Stehekin and many park service staff.I do ask for prayers for the people of the Stehekin Community and family members of the two people that passed away. Some of the people involved in the rescue are also having difficulty with what they saw. The pilot also needs prayers to regain control of emotions. It has been neat to see the community come together in such a time of crisis and also difficult to see this tragedy tug at their hearts.
If you are interested in more details, there are some articles on various websites, but one I know for sure is http://www.nwcn.com/. You can just search "float plane crash" and a few articles will come up, even some pictures I think.
Thanks for the prayers and I just wanted to give people some info because we heard it has been on the news.

One of the great things about visiting Las Vegas has always been the excellent entertainment we have here. There's many fine shows for whatever interest you might have. Some of the best value out there are one of the "tribute" shows. It's also a great way to catch several acts on the same bill. One of the best tribute shows is American Superstars which has been running at the Stratosphere hotel and casino for quite a while now.

As recently noted by the Las Vegas Shows Reviews blog:

The biggest challenge of successfully impersonating a celebrity not only resides in how well the individual artist’s respective talent can be performed, but also in capturing those personalities, the posturing, and their overall look. When you go to “American Superstars”, you will definitely see Elvis shake his hips, Michael Jackson glide across the floor with his moonwalk, and hear Christina Aguilera belt out that musical range that she is known for. True to Las Vegas style, there is also an ensemble of showgirls who provide back up dancing and vocals for the artists, as well as having a chance to individually shine between each performance. Also backing each act is a full band who rocks out each hit alongside the featured artist.

Rounding out the cast is Darren Lee as Elvis Presley, Chad Givens as Tim McGraw, John Anthony as Rod Stewart, Lorena Peril as Christina Aguilera, and Damian Brantley as Michael Jackson. The cast is very enthusiastic about their performances, encouraging patrons to join in on the fun. Their interaction helps to bring the audience into the spotlight themselves, whether it is coming out into the audience while performing, prompting people to sing along, or even some light-heated joking with the crowd. The tribute artists get into their roles with such a fun attitude, it’s easy to be caught up in the overall good time.

"American Superstars" covers the gamut of musical styles, providing the audience with everything from country to pop to rock 'n' roll, spanning almost five decades of music. Anyone in attendance will surely find something to fit their tastes. Each performer also does a fantastic job covering the particular artist's style and persona.

The finale brings the entire cast of artists and dancers out for a last upbeat ensemble number. Afterward the cast makes their way to the showroom lobby for a meet and greet with the audience and to also take photographs, making the audience feel much more a part of the show.

It's a great choice to add to your Vegas experience. The show is a "clean", family-friendly show as well. With ticket prices on the rise, you'd be hard-pressed to see even one artist for the price of one ticket to "American Superstars", much less all five performers! You definitely get a great bang for your buck here!

With all of the different and varied shows here in Las Vegas it's really tough to stand out. One of the more unique shows to come along is Toxic Audio which is currently running in the V Theater located at the Planet Hollywood casino.

As the Las Vegas Shows Reviews blog recently noted:

It’s five singers with no back up band or recorded tracks pumping out “Autumn Leaves” in English, French, German, Korean, Scat, and Pig Latin. Its Paul Sperrazza, a “human beat box,” tearing up the audience like a mix of Jim Carey, Jerry Lewis, and that guy who almost won American Idol last year. It’s also Rene Ruiz, the founder of the group, whose credits include “Forever Plaid,” delivering a unforgettable show to a cheering audience.

Oh and there are 4 other performers making it happen for the audience too; Christine Vienna, Tim Jones, and Heather Friedman, and the “sound guy. The sound guy gets his own song during the show and definitely deserves his own sentence in this review, his name is Shannon Brady. There is no band to coordinate but he’s does a heck of job keeping five very good singers in perfect balance.

You have to like a team of singers who can improv a beat box song about Pat and Debbie Boone and who will play “Jaws” with its audience. As a matter of fact the audience is almost the 6th player in the troop. Four or Five audience members are brought on stage at different times in the 70 minute show, and singers perform in the isles just a frequently

It really is amazing how they can make so many different sounds with just their voices. They do a family-friendly show as well, covering many hits from years past as well as instantly recognizable TV theme songs.

The audience gets plenty of chances to participate too. At several points in the show people are brought on stage to join the festivies and the cast members frequently venture out into the crowd, giving a close up look at how talented the performers truly are.

All in all Toxic Audio is a very entertaining show and if you're looking to see something unique without spending a ton of money this might just be your ticket!

ROAD TRIP...details and photos

SO....after we left the Grand Canyon in Arizona, we headed to the Hoover Dam. It was really a neat place and we toured the power plant and took a lot of photos of the dam from inside and outside. Our timing was a little off though because it was Saturday and there were a lot of other people there as well. One of the most interesting things was the new bridge they are building over the river to keep a lot of the traffive off of the dam. It is really big and it taking several years to complete.
Once you drive or walk across the dam you are in Nevada as the river is a boundary between Arizona and Nevada...on to the Las Vegas we drove. It was much like we expected with signs, people, cars, and buildings everywhere. We both agreed that we probably won't be visiting there again. We did get to see some of a water fountain show though in front of the Bellocio (?spelling on that one), which was super cool.
After Vegas it was back to nature with a drive to Death Valley...now this was a cool place. We drove in just as the sun was setting and there were no trees around, just desert. It was beautiful (even though I was car sick from reading all the silly billboards in Vegas)!!! We found a campground and set up camp for the night. Camping there was much different there than in Arizona. It was pretty hot and windy all night...the wind did keep us cool though. We definitely slept on top of the sleeping bags though instead of inside them as we had on previous nights. We drove down to Badwater Basin which is the place with the lowest elevation in the US I think. It is below sea level and there is salt everywhere in the water. The place got it's name because when pioneers tried to cross the desert there and found water...they were excited to have something for their mules to drink. Then termed the place "badwater" when the mules refused it because of all the salt. You can see some of the salt deposits in one of the photos. The drive out of Death Valley was windy and curvy, but still scenic. We even saw some old ruins of houses and a place where they used to mine the salt. There were several places where wagon trains were set up that mules used to pull.

On to Sequoia National Park from there. The landscape there and vegetation on the drive into the park was one of my favorites I think. We drove along side a crystal clear lake and there was green grass and big trees everywhere. We went straight to the campground when we arrived to set up camp for the night. Camping was much cooler there and we were definitely back into our sleeping bags. It was a nice campground called Buckeye Flat (you should check it out if you ever go there) and we camped beside two ladies from Washington. They offered us apple crisp for dessert...it was yummy!! They also had a nice fire, so we sat around for a while and talked. The next morning we took a few short walks around the Park. Guess what we saw? Sequoia Trees!! I bet you didn't guess that...and two bears. There was a momma bear and a cub in a grassy area on the way up a road to Morrca Rock (I think that is how you spell it) and then they were sleeping by a tree on the way back. Very cute I must say...from a distance of course.

After Sequoia, we drove through part of Kings Canyon National Park, but there wasn't much more to see there since we had already seen the trees. We headed on to Yosmite National Park, where we planned to spend a few days. It is supposedly known for all the climbing routes and waterfalls coming down the mountains. It was definitely beautiful driving into the park and seeing all the waterfalls…only problem was that all the campgrounds were full when we arrived. A little piece of advise…reserve your campsites for camping there in advance….so you don’t get frustrated like we did. Fortunately we found a climber’s campground that was super cheap and didn’t require reservations! We decided it was great and set up camp for two nights there. It was great to be in the same place for more than just a night and we were even able to use the showers FOR FREE at another campground. We walked around the park and biked some too….it worked out well because Lady was allowed on most of the biking trails. Make sure to look at those pictures on the shutterfly website…they are some awesome shots of the mountain’s reflections in Mirror Lake. It was fun taking pictures there as the scenery was breathtaking.

On to San Francisco we drove and over several huge suspension bridges….the largest being the Golden Gate of course. We didn’t hang around there too long though because of all the traffic and people…it was a Sunday afternoon so everyone was out and about.
Route 1 on the California coast is beautiful, curvy, windy, narrow, and slow!! We did make it up most of it along the coast though. The view was of the rugged coastline to the left with waves crashing against the rocky shore and green pastures with cattle and horses on the right. That afternoon it was really windy and you could feel the whole truck shaking as we drove so it was a little difficult finding a campsite because all of the sites along the beaches…they were just too windy. We ended up driving inland a little and camped at this State Park up on top of a mountain…..it was nice and quiet there…and there wasn’t any wind!

After another day of driving the coastline, we made it to Redwood National Park just in time to find a nice campsite and watch the sunset…we even saw some Elk on the way in. It was a great campsite and we had our first fire of the trip…on purpose of course. We sat around for a while before heading to our tent for sleep. The next day was my birthday, May 2, so Steven climbed in the back of the truck with all our gear to find my birthday present. I was very excited!! It was a down vest that I love and have worn a lot already. I don’t think I took it off for two days straight after I got on my birthday. It was a nice relaxing morning and we walked around to see some of the Redwood trees and checked out the visitor’s center there. There was this one piece of a tree that was in the visitor’s center that looked like it had elk horns growing out of it…it was actually where an elk was rubbing his horns and got stuck. So you can see his skull from one side…I only mention that because there is a photo in our collection and I think it is one of Steven’s favorite photos from the whole trip…just kidding…but he did think it was cool which is why he had me take a picture of it. So, another birthday gift for me was a nice hot breakfast that we ate in Crescent City right before we headed into Oregon.

The coastline of Oregon wasn’t nearly as windy and curvy, but just as beautiful. We even saw a few lighthouses there and agree that the next time we make the trip, we would just drive inland in California and see the coastline of Oregon instead. After we drove through Portland, which looks like a cool city by the way, we drove by an aviator museum. We stopped and visited for about 4-5 hours admiring all the planes and exhibits. They have the original “Spruce Goose” which is a wooden float plane…the largest one ever built. E-mail Steven and he can tell you all about it if you would like to know more details. We ended up finding another neat campground in OR and we were the only campers there, so that was nice for a night. Then we continued the drive along the Oregon/Washington state line until we crossed over the river (can’t remember the name of it) and made it into Washington. We drove all the way into Wenatchee that day and found one campsite left at a campground in Wenatchee because the apple blossom festival was occurring.
While in Wenatchee, we stayed with some friends, Rick and Vicki Young (just checking to see if you are reading this Rick so you know I mentioned you specifically) for a few days to get some final things completed before heading up to Stehekin on the boat. We did find a truck to buy..I still haven’t taken any photos of it..but they are forth coming, went grocery shopping and set up accounts the boat company and grocery store. It also took a little time to repack all our belongings into the “new” old truck to be sent up on the barge the following Saturday.

So, on Wednesday May 7th, we got on the Lady of Lake II boat heading to Stehekin with a few bags and some groceries….we arrived around lunchtime and our time road trip was over as our new time in Stehekin began.

Hope you enjoy all the pictures. Click the link below to see all 400 pictures from the “road trip.”

5,276 310 1162

5,276 is the number of miles we drove using 310 gallons of gas costing us 1,162 dollars and we finally made it to WASHINGTON!! Yes, that's right....two weeks later and we are here. Steven and I are actually staying with some friends and going grocery shopping today in Wenatchee. Tomorrow we will head up on the boat to begin our adventure in Stehekin. The road trip was tons of fun and I will post details and pictures later when I get internet access on my own computer. I figure if I post details now...I am less likely to post pictures later....and of course everyone wants to see the pictures. We actually arrive in Wenatchee of Saturday night and have been getting everything done and final details figured out before riding up on the boat. We even found a truck to take up lake and it is perfect for Stehekin (will send pics with details later).

So...look for more comments soon and Steven and I are going to try to get together a link to a page with details on travel arrangements for those of you who want to plan a trip to visit. I think that will be the easiest way to help you arrange for travel since we can't correspond very easily by phone....feel free to send emails though!

Part of the fun of Las Vegas is you never know what celebrities you'll see out & about. A great place to see some is the Smashtime Saturdays celebration over at Body English located at the Hard Rock Hotel .

This weekend's surprise guest was Grammy winner Akon who took over the mic and wowed the crowd with an impromptu performance. Also spotted among the crowd was Tv's “Gossip Girl" star Leighton Meester who was with fellow actors Joshua Lebar and Sebastian Stan. Leighton was pulled onstage by Akon to sing "Happy Birthday" to the event's host at one point! Other partygoers included including “Sopranos” star Steve Schirripa, UFC Champ Rampage Jackson.

The party spilled over on Sunday to the world-famous REHAB at the Hard Rock pool. There, the new crowd favorite Akon once again surprised the crowd with a preformance that lasted over an hour! He had only planned on doing 3 songs but the energy of the crowd kept him going! Once again Akon shared the stage, this time with Smashtime DJ Clinton Sparks, who produced 3 tracks on his latest release. Leighton Meester and friends were once again on hand for the party as were other famous faces like fighters Floyd Mayweather and Rampage Jackson along with NFL players Alex Smith and Sedrick Ellis
