I'm a good Canadian. And good Canadians NEVER cheers for Americans.
However, there is one sport where I'm putting my full support behind our neighbors to the South. (and before you start freaking out, of course I'm cheering for the Yanks only if there's no Canadian option...so step off and keep reading). Ok, what's the sport you ask? SOCCER.
Soccer is the number one sport globally and the number one recreation sport in North America. But in order for soccer to gain popularity and respect in the most powerful country in the world the Americans have to start winning...Americans love a winner.
MLS is a well run league. It cautiously expands and does attract the occasional over the hill European superstar. But what would international success by the USA mean to this league? It would be HUGE. Players would want to play here and fans would want to watch.
Why do I bring this up now and not a year ago during the World Cup? Well, I didn't have a blog a year ago. But, more importantly, the American WOMEN are in the World Cup Final and could walk away with one of the biggest prizes in soccer. This would be a massive accomplishment, especially considering the favorite and host team Germany hadn't lost in 12 years.
The WWC will be held in Canada in 2015. With games even held in Vancouver! An American win would mean bigger crowds and more TV coverage. So, if your a fan of soccer I would dust off that red, white, and blue and cheer your face off on Sunday for an American team that, let's face it, deserves to win and has a smoking hot keeper who will probably pull a Brandy
Chastaine.
