Sunday, 6:00AM...

was the time we met at the corrals this morning. It was dark outside and the stars were still visible when looking up at the sky. Coats and warm hats were needed for the cold temperatures. Bicyles and cars pulled up with valley kids, horse owners, and wranglers to assist with haltering horses. Each fall, usually in October, all the horses go out on the barge to a pasture for the winter. Today was the day for their summer work season to end and the winter rest to begin. The departure time for the barge was 7:00am, so I checked my watch to make sure the group was on time as we started down the road. Some people walked, others road as we headed towards the barge. The light peered over the mountains as the sun rose and sound of hooves echoed across the lake. It was refreshing to see the calm lake and feel the cool air on my face as I lead a string of five horses, starting with Foss. As the sun rose and flashlights were turned off, the horses were loaded onto the barge. The valley seems a little more empty without those four-legged friends, but they they will return in the spring for another summer in Stehekin.
