What is Broadband?

1.  What is broadband?
An abbreviation from the words ‘Broad Bandwidth’, the term broadband describes the wide range of frequencies that can be transmitted through communication channels (i.e. Internet). The wider your bandwidth is, the greater the amount of information that can be transmitted simultaneously. Broadband is basically 'faster' internet. Broadband can access internet speeds equal or greater than 256kbps whilst dial up can only reach up to 56 kbps.

2. What units are used to measure bandwidth?
Bandwidth is measured in bits per second. "Gigabits" nowadays.

3. How much faster is broadband than dial up?
Broadband is 200 kbps faster than Dial Up

4. What are the speeds that broadband operates at compared to dial up?
Broadband: 256kbps
Dial up: 56 kbps
5. What are some of the advantages of using a broadband connection to download something like a video compared to dial up?The broadband connection can transfer more amounts of information therefore downloading the youtube video at a faster speed. Dial  up cannot transfer the same amount of information that broadband can, as it doesn't have a wide range of frequencies that can be transmitted through the internet. Another advantage of broadband internet is that you can still speak on the phone while on the internet. When you are connected to a dial up connection, if you wish to speak on the phone while connected to it, it will not work.

6. A paint picture that demonstrates how a high bandwidth connection can move more data than a dial up connection. The high bandwidth connection is wider and can fit more "cars" (aka data) at a one time. The dial up connection still moves at the same speed but isn't as "wide" and cannot fit more "cars" at the one time.
