Photo of the Day Archive: Soccet during the 2006 World Cup

This is an archive of old "Photos of the Day" from my stay in Cologne, Germany in the summer of 2006.

So, the World Cup is going on right now in Germany, and the Germans
couldn't be happier--they all have "Fussballfieber", or "soccer
fever".

The first picture shows part of the "Fan Fest", which is one of the
city's official parties for the games. It is basically a big beer
garden in front of the cathedral, with a huge TV showing the games,
with live entertainment between the games. There weren't a lot of
people there when I took this picture, probably because the current
game was Argentina vs. Ivory Coast--two teams that I don't think
anyone knows anything about.

The second picture is just a sweet little side-street downtown, all
decked out with flags and decorations for the World Cup. This is in
the "pedestrian zone" downtown, so no cars are on these narrow little
streets.

The last picture is just cool. Soccer fans typically wear long scarfs
with their team's name to the game, especially if the weather is cold.
So this is just a picture of a vendor selling these scarfs for the
World Cup, with all of the nations represented. I think that the
scarfs are pretty cool.
