Shelby Graham Salley...

was delivered to our doorstep in Stehekin, WA on a sunny day in June when she was removed from her housing at the landing and had no place to go. Sounds tragic I know...but it wasn't "that" bad. Each year we seem to have a child, I mean a friend, no I mean a child...to feed and love for a season of our life. Living in Columbia, it was Gina who would come over once or twice a week to have dinner and share work stories. She was a blessing to have around and we do miss her dearly. Last summer it was Mistaya who conveniently showed up right before or after or during dinner several nights a week. Each time I saw her I was positive she was going to order groceries soon because her cupboards were always bare...but no...I am pretty sure she went all summer without ever ordering groceries. The parent-child relationship did work to our advantage though with Mistaya: we fed her dinner and she brought us day-old items from the bakery. Plus she was great a baking pies and those appeared every now and then. This summer, it is our dear Shelby. She did actually stay with us for about 10 days before moving into the "yak-shak" a few miles up the road. I happily fed her dinner and she willingly did the dishes (Shelby are your reading this....the dishes...they are piling up). Steven and I think she is working her way back into the house as she has spent two nights, tonight will make three, there this past week already....it might be more of a possibility than we realize with staff changes (which means housing changes) occurring on a weekly basis. It has been a true joy to have her at our house..straight from Clemson, SC . She rafts in the afternoons and kayaks or works store shifts in the morning...a hard worker she is. It has been her goal to be in silly pictures over the past week, so I figured I should post them to add entertainment value here. I only have a few on the computer now, really only one, but more will follow along shortly. Shelby is only here a few more weeks and we will miss her when she is gone...but for now..."Buttons" is our child for the summer and if you need to find her to fill in for a raft trip on her day off, just check our house.
