According to Radio Netherlands Worldwide, President Alan García of Peru has said he wants to bring back the death penalty in his South American country. If Garcia is successful, Joran van der Sloot could face execution for the murder of Stefani Flores, 21, in Lima.

Mr García told media "certain crimes must be paid for with the criminal's life".

García told the press.Van der Sloot, long a key suspect in the disappearance of American student Natalee Holloway, is incarcerated in Castro Castro, a tough maximum security prison while awaiting trial. One of Van der Sloot's fellow inmates, an American, William Trickett Smith, was recently extradited back to the US on charges that he is the notorious "suitcase murderer".

Smith is believed to have killed his Peruvian wife, dismembered her and stuffed her corpse in a suitcase. Smith's case nearly elicited as much Peruvian outrage as van der Sloot's. Joran's alleged victim was the daughter of a prominent Peruvian leader.
